The Tragedie Cristiane by Annibale Marchese (Naples, 1729): a performer's dilemma
The Tragedie Cristiane by Annibale Marchese (Naples in 1729), represents a unique collection of ten tragedies intricately connected with the aesthetic, political, and religious developments of early-18th-century Europe. With contributions from notable painters such as Francesco Solimena and his pupil Francesco De Mura, alongside music by ten esteemed composers (including Hasse, Porpora, Vinci, Leo, and Durante), Annibale Marchese aimed to create an enduring monument to the Italian theatrical tradition in a completely original way. Today, performers are presented with a complex and delicate interpretative challenge, dealing with issues deeply related to the nature itself of this theatrical experiment.
